Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
Mark Twain (via quote-book)
I used this at some point in my high school valedictorian speech, but can’t remember exactly where I placed it in there.
I do remember I opened up my speech by saying “someone once said Women Who Behave Rarely Make History and ladies, we’ve proven that theory to be truth.” My graduating class was the first of a new performing arts school in New Jersey and by senior year, we were a class made up of all ladies. We had survived four years of crazy teachers, theatre, competition, dating gay men, family issues and creative angst (ha!). To be completely honest, we really didn’t behave very well at all and I’m glad we didn’t. We have four years of hilarious stories to tell, often inspiring disbelief in the people we are telling.
And for the record, I still think that opening quote is the damn truth.
